That Bird Place

Exotic Bird Rescue of North-Central Pennsylvania

non-profit/non-affiliated

Although we do raise and sell parrots and smaller birds, {see "That Bird Place" link to the left} this arm of our establishment is strictly non-profit. However, some of the procedes from our "business" do help to support our rescue efforts. Our rescue arm is inspired solely by our love for these majestic creatures.

How does it work?

We take avian pets that can no longer be cared for by their owners. We understand that unforeseen circumstances do arise and pet owners can no longer keep their beloved friend. They are then place either in our home, or one of our foster homes for shelter, recovery, and loving care for a certain amount of time before they become available for permanent adoption. Birds with health and behavioral issues will not be adopted out until their problems are resolved. Some birds may never be adopted out because of their circumstances and needs. The horror stories behind some birds' lives would bring tears to anyone. Birds bought on impulse by well meaning people can end up in the hands of people who do not understand the needs of an avian pet. They are not like cats and dogs. Their care is far more complex.

Anyone would want to bring one of these beauties home when they see how remarkable they are, but often times the attention that they get when they first arrive fades away in time, and birds can not handle that. Just as often, well-meaning buyers do not understand the needs of a parrot/bird. Unlike dogs and cats, a parrot that is neglected, bored, or frustrated will often times become a self mutilator, plucking their feathers and even biting holes in their flesh.. A bird that is left in his cage and fed once a day with no other interaction, other than being introduced to a curious visitor, is a bird that is tortured!! Often, people do not even realize what they are, or are not, doing to their pet. In captivity, parrots/birds can not survive and thrive without dedicated care and companionship.

HOWEVER

This is not to say that every rescue involves people who have not cared properly for their avain pet. In many cases, life circumstances change and the responsible choice is to find another home for your parrot. Job relocation, deaths in the family, and even divorce can change things considerably and at times it is just best to place your parrot in another home. That is why we offer our services. We can help take some of the stress of this heart breaking task because we can care for your pet until a suitable home is found.....

Adopting an avian pet

Adoptive homes must meet a certain criteria. For larger birds they must be experienced with avian needs. But for all birds, we look for homes that are stable, non-smoking, and with the financial means to care for these beautiful creatures properly which would include annual vet. checkups. Adopting families must be prepared to take on all needs that the bird would have.

Adoptive families will be given a questionaire and an informal "course"and detailed care sheet on caring for a parrot for the long term, and it will be stressed that these birds must get the same attention is three years as they do the first few weeks of their home coming.

Adoptive families will sign a contract stating that the bird will not be sold, given away, or used for breeding.{See Pro-creation Exception} In the event that the adoptive family can no longer care for the bird, which we strive to avoid, the bird comes back to us. We do understand that life circumstances happen without notice, and we are willing to work with you in that event. But, if the bird you adopted from us somehow recycles back to us-other than directly from you- you will be held liable for the terms of the contract.

We do not adopt out any birds to people who appear to be "pet collectors" or that may be making the decision on impulse.

Adoptive homes must be from the Pennsylvania and surrounding state area because we do not ship and must meet the adoptive families.

We reserve the right to say no.

Foster Homes

We do not presume that we personally have the time, space, and energy to care for all birds simply because we love and are awed by them. We are looking for foster homes that would give these birds the proper environment so that they can survive and thrive until a permament home is found. Foster homes would have the same questionaire and "course" as adoptive homes and must understand that they may or may not have these birds for the long term. We look for homes where the main care taker is experienced, and is at home most of the time. Foster homes must understand the pyche of avain pets. Some birds placed in foster homes may end up being there permanently because of their specific needs, so when foster families take in a foster bird, they must realized that they may be in it for the long term.

Foster homes must be in the North-Central Pennsylvania area so that we can visit the homes from time to time, work with the caretaker, and be on hand for emergencies.

Sponsors

If you love avian pets, but do not have the time, energy, or space to have one, be a sponsor! For a certain monthly fee that goes directly to that foster home for the care of your sponsored feathered friend, you will be given photos and updates. If you do not feel comfortable with sending money, you can donate food and supplies on a one time, or regular basis.

{We do not accept donations unless there is a needy parrot and $$ needs.}

If you are interesting in placing your bird with us, adopting, fostering, or sponsoring, contact us for more information.

Disclaimer: This is a non-profit extention of our love and dedication to these awesome, exotic, avian creatures. Presently, we are not affiliated with any organization. We do not represent ourselves as having an avian sanctuary-though that is our long-term goal. Our primary function is to organize educated and experienced foster homes for these feathered friends.
