Diet and Nutrition When we stop and consider where these beautiful birds originate, whether they be the little cockatiel or the large MaCaw, we must also consider what they would be eating in the wild. We would want to consider what would be harmful to them in the wild as well. In the wild they are gathering their nourishment from wild growing things, and are also somewhat a scavenger. But to the greater degree, eating wild fruits and vegetables from their habitat or Farmer Bill's crop. They're eating leaf material and barks from trees, and so on and so on. Parrots are able to see color and this has to do with breeding, but it also has to do with their pallet. They are naturally drawn to what is good for them in the wild, which is something humans could take note of with their own diets. Providing ourselves and our feathered friends with a rich variety of green, red, yellow, orange and even purple vegetables is a good way of making sure we all get our vitamins and mineral. Other
things like fruits, whole wheat pastas and bread are nice
for snacking. Stay away from anything that is white
refined wheat or sugar. In the wild, pesticide is a devasting thing for any wildlife, and when we do not buy organically, or at least make sure our fresh items are washed well, we are ingesting this same pesticides. Other harmful things can include household cleaners, candles, and such, so precautions should be taken there as well. If it is good for, or harmful for, your human baby, you can bet the same is true for your feathered baby!
